Sydney Train Walks

From Heathcote via Royal National Parl 4h / 14km to Loftus

About this walk

This walk follows the Karloo Pools and Uloola Falls wlaking tracks.

From the Royal National Park Visitor Centre the walk follows the tramway to the Sydney Tramway Museum. On Wednesdays and Sundays it's possible to ride the tram there.

It takes about 4 hours to complete the full 14 kilometre walk, but plan extra for plenty of breaks and photography stops. Consider that there's a lot to see along the way.

Along the way

From the Heathcote Station carpark turn right down Wilson Parade.

Start down the Karloo Track on the left.

Follow the signs to the Karloo Track to the right.

Continue down the Karloo Track to the end of the ridge.

Cross the Kangeroo Creek at bottom of the ridge.

Find the sign to the Karloo Track at side of the pools and climb back up to the trail.

Climb the steps up the ridge and follow the trail along the ridge top.

Carefully cross the creek at Uloola Falls.

From the falls follow the path to the Uloola Falls Campground.

To the left from the entrance of campground, follow the sign to Audley.

Continue along the ridge tops on the Uloola Falls Track.

At the intersection continue left to Robertson Roundabout and Audley.

Follow the sign to Engadine at the next intersection.

From the lookout, turn right and follow the clearing down.

Find the stone staircase at the edge of the clearing and climb down.

At the bottom of the descend turn right and follow the sign to Audley.

- 0.5h / 1km Optionally, from Robertson Roundabout follow the Engadine track to Kangaroo Creek.

A metal stairway leads safely down the steep ridge to a swim spot in the creek.

Follow the creek a short way to the left of the pool, to find a place to cross.

A worn path will leads up to the next ridge on the other side.

At the top of the ridge the trail winds its way through the bushland around Engadine.

In several places firetrails cross the trail. Watch for the signs to Engadine.

A staircase leads up from the trail onto the Engadine Station platform.

At the next intersection turn left and follow the directions to Audley the rest of the way down the ridge.

The trail ends at the Currawong Flat picnic area. Cross the bridge over the Hacking River.

Turn left after the bridge and continue past the Park Visitor Centre to the carpark.

From the carpark follow Sir Bertram Stevens Drive to the left to the weir.

Cross the road after the weir and enter Riverside Drive.

+ 1h / 3km If time allows follow the road to Reids Flat campground.

At the far end of the campground an old road follows the Hacking river.

The road steadily shrinks down to a narrow walking path.

Follow the trail up the small staircase around, or down across an overgrown campground.

Eventually the trail peters out completely at a huge pile of branches and a yellow sign reading 'track end'.

Directly to the left of the sign a well worn scrable leads up the ridge.

Follow the walking trail the scamble joins at the top to the left.

The walking trail ends at a fire trail. Follow this to the left as well.

Where the Temptation Creek fire trail joins this one, follow the directions to the Visitor Centre.

On the left side of the fire trail, a paved walking path leads to Bungoona Lookout.

Follow the paved walking path to the car park.

Ascend the long staircase of the Honeymoon Track, to the left of the toilet block.

At the top of the Honeymoon Track, continue across the field past the park office.

Cross the entrance to the carpark and find the tram platform. Wednesdays and Sundays there is a tram service to the museum at Loftus.

From the end of the tram platform follow the Rawson Parade Trail along the tram line.

Follow the trail to the right along the fenced depot area.

Follow the fence line to the left at the intersection with the mountain bike trails.

At the end of the fenceline, follow the Rawson Parade Trail right through the bush along the highway.

Turn left at the intersection with the Temptation Creek Trail to stay need the highway.

Leave the trail at the traffic lights at the Tramway Museum at Loftus.

Use the traffic lights to cross the highway safely, using the refuge in the middle.

On the other side of the highway, enter the Tramway museum and commuter car park.

Loftus Station is at the far end of the carpark.

What to bring

  • Check the national parks website for possible detours, closures and restrictions.
  • Install an OpenStreetMap app for Android or iOS and preload the area.
  • Download the GPS data if your device can import it.
  • Print out this map and get a better one from a visitor information centre if possible.
  • Be sure to leave enough charge in your phone's battery for emergency calls.
  • Bring plenty of water, comfortable shoes, a hat and SPF 30 sunscreen.
  • Also bring a light windbreaker/raincoat in case you get caught out in the rain.
